What you are describing is the borg warner 3 speed overdrive transmission. Here is a good description of how it worked. +1 very common back then. Todays heavy haul trucks most likely have a 2speed axle like mgfg has or they may even go lower like 8:11 & 5:83 for super heavy haul.

This is late 70's 2 ton GM truck with a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel (453T) a Clark 282V, 5 speed transmission with a GM T170 2 speed rear end. I'm not carrying a load, so instead of using all 10 gears, I'm using 2Hi, 3Hi, 4Lo, 4Hi, 5Hi. Run was to 60 mph, so roughly 0-60 in 22 seconds!

2 Speed Rear End For 1 Ton. As far as i know, none are overdrive, so all you'd get would be a deep low gear. Add to that the fact. I know it will be hard to find, however studebaker offered a 2 speed rear end in their 1 ton trucks in late 40's and early 50's.
